The air is sharp and chilled
Tho’ not because it’s cold
The days are short and filled
Tho’ not with joys of old
It’s just another Christmas without Grandpa

He used to read a story to us
In person, or on the phone
T’was The Night Before Christmas
I can still hear his baritone
It’s just another Christmas without Grandpa

He would read the Old, Old Story
As we gathered ‘round and settled in

Keep Looking Up!

It was dark, pitch black, as we drove through the mountains. Only a toddler, I stood between my grandparents and exclaimed, “Speeky, Grandpa, speeky!” But all was well with him at the wheel. I had no reason to be afraid with Grandpa there, and for the rest of my life I looked up to the man who saw me safely through  those scary mountain roads.

Many years ago I engaged in a heated argument with my closest and dearest friend. The subject matter is not important, but he ended the dispute with a harsh word of rebuke, invoking the name of our grandfather, and the shame I was bringing to his venerable legacy. Happy 4th of July! Today we celebrate the 234th birthday of the independence these United States of America; and our independence from foreign rule has brought us great freedom and liberty.
